mélange
mélange
From this high point-of-view imagine powerful waves and seabirds moving between the dark rugged rocks below. Feel the sea spray on your face as it wafts up the face of the cliff.
A limited palette of rust and blue, a bold sketching style, and extra textural elements highlight the rough surface of the cliff. The look of crumbling rock was created by gluing a piece of frayed cheesecloth glued onto the surface. This piece has 4 deckled edges.
About the title: We usually think of mélange as a mix of spices or colors, but did you know it’s also a geological term meaning a “chaotic rock formation that's a mixture of strong and weak rocks?” (Thx Google.) The cliffs of the Mendocino Headlands are mélange. This weak formation creates the crumbling rock walls so easily eroded by wave action into stunning arches and coves. I freaking love science!!
